CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICAN MINERALS - Last updated January 07, 2021.
The geology of central and South America is dominated by the Eastern Pacific subduction zone. Continental arc magmatism has created many young granites rich in gold and copper with abundant polymetallic ore veins. Extensive weathering has created a vast suite of secondary minerals including evaporate deposits that host most of the world's lithium reserves. Eastern South America is dominated by ancient granitic rocks that form the core of the South American continent. Granite pegmatites host the Tourmalines, Beryls, Feldspars and Micas that South America is famous for.
